Lodge
Our 5 Star lodge is located approximately 150 miles northwest of Churchill near the border with Nunavut on Little Duck Lake, which is part of the huge Wolverine River system. The lodge is beautifully situated on a sandy glacial esker overlooking the lake and a short distance from the Wolverine Rapids.
Our guests can expect all the comforts of home in the detached cottages adjacent to the lodge. Each cottage has 3 fully carpeted suites, which are finished in natural cedar and accommodate 2 - 4 persons per suite. Each suite has its own fully modern private washroom facility and thermostatically controlled heat.
The main lodge, with its huge picture windows overlooking the lake, provides a comfortable setting where our guests can enjoy exceptional meals in the dining room, and in the evening relax in the licensed bar and lounge. If you need to communicate with the outside world both satellite internet services and a satellite phone are available.
Weather
During the months of July and August guests can expect pleasant average daytime temperatures near 70 F, cooling down to around 45 degrees at night. But remember, this is the sub-arctic and it is not unusual to have a night or two of frost, even during the summer months.
Things begin to cool down in September and daytime highs are generally around 50 to 55 F and nighttime temperatures will dip close to the freezing mark. By the end of the month daytime temperatures will hover around 40 F and you can expect rather chilly nights, dropping down to around 25 F.
Average rainfall during the summer months is between 2 and 3 inches per month. Showers and short rain squawls that blow through the area are common, but heavy rainfall is rare. By mid-September those showers turn to flurries.
Winds are generally from the Northwest and guests should expect some blustery conditions during their stay. The barrens are much like the high plains with the morning typically being quite calm and then the wind slowly builds during the day. Several days a month storms and high winds will create extremely rough conditions on the lake and prevent the boats from leaving the dock.
How to Get There
Although The Lodge at Little Duck is in one of the remotest fly-in areas of North America , it is easy to get to. Unlike many lodges that are restricted to float-plane access and the problems that can arise because of that, The Lodge at Little Duck has a 3,600 foot landing strip.
The air charters to camp depart and return to Thompson , Manitoba . Guests driving to Thompson can expect an easy 6 hour drive north of Winnipeg on Highway 6. Vehicles can be left at the Thompson airport during your stay at the lodge. Guests flying can fly directly to Thompson from Winnipeg on Calm Air which offers several commercial flights daily ( www.calmair.com ).
Guests should plan on overnighting in Thompson for both Northbound and Southbound travel. We can make reservations for you or you can call either the Days Inn (204-778-6000) or the Country Inn (204-778-8879). Ask for our special Lodge rate. |
